Our History

Kolej IGS (KIGS) Brunei Darussalam was formed in the year 2002 to cater for the growing need of vocational education and training, particularly in the areas of business and information technology. The management of KIGS had realized that a large number of Bruneian students could not qualify for the public sector institutions of higher learning due to the limited places available, and the majority of them could not afford to study overseas due to the higher costs. In order to help young Bruneians realize their dream of achieving higher academic qualifications, it is focused on developing the pathways for the “O” level achievers through certificate, diplomas and to undergraduate (1st Degree) program in Information Technology and Business Studies.

Historically, in the year 2003, the Government of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Education offered the Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Council (BDTVEC) programs to the private sector. KIGS was the first private tertiary college to take the bold initiative and accept the challenge to develop such courses. To begin with, it focused on two of programs, namely: Business Studies and Computer Studies. In June 2004, KIGS started its operations and enrolled the first grou of students to BDTVEC progammes namely Pre National Diploma in Computer Studies (PNDCS), National Diploma in Computer Studies (NDCS), Pre National Diploma in Business & Finance (PNDBF) and National Diploma in Business & Finance (NDBF).

In June 2007, KIGS achieved another milestone when it launched the Higher National Diploma in Computing, Higher National Diploma in Business (Management) and Higher National Diploma in Business (Accounting). Realising the growing educational needs of working adults, KIGS started Part-Time (Evening) programmes in September same year. These part-time programmes are specially designed for those working adults who wish to upgrade their educational qualifications for their long term career and professional development. Classes are conducted in the evening from Monday and Thursday.

Since its inception, KIGS has produced more than 160 graduates in different programmes who are working with various public and private sector organizations including government ministries, HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Brunei Shell, DST and other major local and foreign companies. Within a year of its establishment, KIGS became known to both local community and its neighboring countries. It has developed its strength through the linkages with its Programme Moderators who originate from the United Kingdom and Australia. It is through the help of these moderators that KIGS maintains its status and academic standard. With the gradual increase in the number of students, the number of permanent resource person has increased from six to fifteen highly-qualified lecturers in total to cater for about 300 students. All the facilitators are from the best blend of foreign and local professionals.
